Protecting UK Critical Infrastructures Against Electromagnetic Attacks

Ilhem Toumi - ETS Lindgren

UK critical infrastructures, from defence and government to energy, transport and health, financial services face growing risks from electromagnetic threats such as HEMP, EMP and IEMI. This session outlines the threat landscape, key UK/EU/NATO regulations and the challenges of protecting both civilian and military systems. It will also highlight practical protective measures and showcase ETS-Lindgren solutions that help organisations achieve compliance and resilience against EM attacks.

HEMP and Threat to Modern Electronic Systems

Vincent Keyser - MPE Ltd

High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) is an increasing threat to modern electronic systems, while protecting sensitive information against Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) through TEMPEST protocols remains critical. Given the widespread reliance on electronics in critical infrastructure, even partial disruption can have serious consequences. This presentation examines the use of HEMP power line filters to mitigate HEMP effects and TEMPEST filters to safeguard information security. It also considers top-level design constraints, trade-offs, and key imperatives for the successful implementation of these filters.

COTS In Critical Infrastructure: Bridging The EMC GAP

Richard Hardy - TÜV SÜD

Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) equipment, particularly IT, Security and Housekeeping systems that are commonly specified for use in Critical and National Security Infrastructure projects, leading to significant issues with EMC assurance. TÜV SÜD experts regularly work on such projects and here present a 360 degree approach including review and down selection of target systems, desktop analysis of extant EMC test results and GAP analysis, RF site surveys, targeted laboratory EMC testing and remedial actions in the event of non-compliances together with final post installation on-site EMC testing to keep these complex projects on time and on budget.
