HARTING take rail power distribution to the next level with new solutions

HARTING's power distribution products for rail vehicles are quick and convenient to install and are easy to maintain.

HARTING has designed new interfaces for the power supply of trains that are optimised for long service life and sustainability. The Han HPR High Performance Transformer Connector (HPTC) is a transformer interface specially developed for railway customers and outdoor use, providing a robust, durable solution for transformer connections.

Traditional transformer connections have often used plastic outer casings, which are not tough enough to cope with the demanding conditions on the roof of rail vehicles. Transformer connections are exposed to environmental influences including mechanical impacts, water, oil, direct sunlight and ozone, all of which can negatively influence the lifetime of the connections.

The HPTC series was specially developed to withstand these influences and is a secure solution for protecting connections according to railway standards (EN 50467, EN 50124-1, EN 61373, EN 45545, EN 60137).

The HPTC offers a completely pluggable solution with a robust housing, based on the proven HARTING High Pressure Railway (HPR) standard. This enables a significantly longer service life.

This enables a significantly longer service life. The HPTC range from HARTING is available in 400, 850 and 1400 A power classes, while voltages up to 3.6 kV/4.8 kV can be transmitted. An IP degree of protection up to IP69K can also be implemented.

New housing for jumper cables

The Han HPR VarioShell was specifically developed for rolling stock jumper applications. The two-part enclosure achieves protection class IP69K by using a counterpressure frame, in connection with a circumferential internal seal. The enclosure cover is removable, allowing efficient assembly from both inside and outside the carriage. Plug-in connections for wagon transitions on trains are a key feature of the housing and are now easier to access. Time and effort involved in operation, service and maintenance are significantly reduced. In the event of a fault, it is possible to open the housing cover, meaning there is no need to interrupt all connections.

The Han HPR VarioShell is an open system that additionally provides counter pressure frames, cable managers and shielding plates to guide and intercept cables of different diameters. The new housing system can be used as a classic surface-mounted housing or bulked mounted housing - and forms a robust alternative for distribution boxes, for example on the roof of the vehicle, on the outside wall or on the bogie.

  • Longer lifetime due to optimised design against water, dust and ice
  • Time savings during the installation process due to free access from all directions
  • Weight savings due to the replacement of distribution boxes and shorter cable runs
  • High flexibility due to full compatibility with HARTING's Han HPR portfolio (retrofit)

Han HPR TPL: Simpler power distribution in underfloor areas

To date, power distribution systems in underfloor areas have relied on UIC 552. The different interfaces of these systems each require their own installation technology and must be stocked separately. Thanks to the Han HPR Train Power Line (TPL) all this now becomes a great deal easier, as there is only one completely pre-assembled Y-distributor as standard interface and single poles for the pluggable connection of the cables. Consequently, HARTING's TPL offers a uniform power supply across all wagons.

  • Significantly lighter than previous solutions - around 10 kg lighter per wagon
  • TPL housings are equipped with Han HC Modular high-current contacts
  • Transmit power up to 800 A / 5100 V DC / 3000 V AC

A global market leader in the manufacture of connectors and interconnection systems, HARTING is renowned for its reliable connector solutions. HARTING's rolling stock solutions are available from APC, alongside all of their industrial, automotive and energy distribution products.
