APC time synchronisation experts and Meinberg join forces at the CIGRE 2022 Technical Exhibition
Discuss your time sync needs with our experts at CIGRE Paris Session 2022, from 29th August - 2nd September 2022
The CIGRE Paris Session returns in 2022, at Palais des Congrès in Paris. As the leading global event for power system expertise, the CIGRE Paris Session 2022 offers delegates a comprehensive experience.
Delegates are able to reconnect face-to-face with our CIGRE community, enjoying all the benefits of in-person networking. The Session follows its unique 'thought leadership congress' format. Spanning the end to end power system, the 16 Study Committees of CIGRE will each host Group Discussion Meetings
APC and Meinberg will be exhibiting at the show showcasing the latest time synchronisation developments and talking about the importance of synchronisation in the rapidly evolving power industry.
CIGRE is a collaborative global community committed to the world's leading knowledge development programme for the creation and sharing of power system expertise.
The Challenges for Synchronisation in Power Generation
To maintain the stability of a grid and to trace faults to their source, every networked device in a power grid requires precise and continuous synchronisation. These are just two of the many applications that illustrate why synchronisation is so critical to modern power generation.
Synchronised Phasor Measurements
Phasor measurement units (PMUs) installed in substations measure voltages, currents, frequencies, and impedances for different parts of the power grid. To ensure that measurements from different PMUs hundreds of miles apart are comparable, these measurements—referred to as synchrophasors—must be timestamped with precision measurable in microseconds, and so these PMUs also need to be synchronised with microsecond-level accuracy.
GPS/GNSS Signal Security
For most countries, the power industry is critical infrastructure and is therefore an appealing target for state-level and criminal cyberattackers, who can manipulate GPS/GNSS signals to disrupt a power station’s time synchronisation and cause frequency volatility in the grid, potentially causing blackouts with voltage surges.
Meinberg time servers support a number of methods for verifying the integrity of GPS/GNSS signals and foiling attempts at signal spoofing & jamming.
